Student Life – Everything you need to know
“Welcome to English Plus Rugby and to Worcester”
You have made a great choice in coming on the English PlusRugby course and the purpose of these pages is to help you get the most from your stay. Browse the tabs to find what you need. If you have any questions please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org – we will be delighted to help you.
We look forward to meeting you soon!
Getting to Worcester
Birmingham International Airport (BHX) is the nearest airport to Worcester and there are lots of train connections via Birmingham New Street Station. We recommend you arrive at Birmingham if possible. You may find the airfares slightly higher than flying to Stansted or London Gatwick for example, but you will save money on travel once you arrive in the UK.
Let us know your flight details
Email us your flight details before you arrive – even if you are travelling to Worcester by yourself – so we are able to let your homestay family know if there are any delays.
Contact your homestay family
Call or email your homestay family before you leave your country so they know when to expect you. Usually they will meet you at Worcester train station when you arrive. If you wish you can bring them a small gift from your country – chocolate is a good idea.
Your first day
On your first morning arrive at Sixways at about 09h00 – 09h15. When you arrive you will be met by a member of staff who will show you where to wait. Don’t be worried, there will be other new people starting as well, and the whole team is very friendly! Because you are under 18 years old either your host family will bring you to Sixways, or you will be picked up from your homestay by a member of the teaching staff.
Your first lesson
Lessons begin at 09h30. There is no written placement test – we place you in your class according to the level on your application form together with other pre-course information we have. During your first lesson your teacher will carry out a verbal check on your English level through class activities.
Lessons are held Monday – Friday and the times are as follows :
- 09h30-11h00 English Lessons
- 11h00-11h30 Morning Break
- 11h30-13h00 English Lessons
- 13h00-14h00 Lunch Provided
- 14h00-16h00 Rugby Coaching
At the end of the day you will be met by a member of the Kingsway staff who will take you to your homestay family. Your homestay family will be responsible for your well-being from this point until the following day’s lessons.
In addition to all the work of English lessons and rugby coaching there is plenty of time for socialising.
There is a 30 minute break in the mornings from 11h00 – 11h30 and you can get a hot or cold drink from the drinks area outside your classroom.
Lunch break is from 13h00-14h00 and there is a buffet lunch with drinks served in the break-out area just outside the classrooms. Toward the end of the lunch break your rugby coaches will collect you from here to take you to the rugby training facilities.
We arrange 2 evening activities during the week which start and finish from a central point in the city centre. Your homestay family will take you there at the start and pick you up again after the activity.
Every Saturday there is a full-day trip arranged when you can be with your friends and classmates. These trips include a visit to Twickenham, the home of English rugby in London, as well as other destinations – some cultural and some just fun!
Other times to socialise
Sundays are generally a day to be with your homestay family (if you are not travelling to or from your course). Homestays often take their students out for the day or involve you in other family activities. It is also possible to meet up with your friends in Worcester centre during the day, but we have a strict curfew of being home by a certain time.
In your final week
If you have booked a return airport transfer please reconfirm your departure flight details with the school representative by the Tuesday of your last week at the latest. We will arrange for your driver to pick you up from your homestay family.
Shopping for presents
Remember that the shops close early most evenings, so don’t leave buying presents to the last day. Plan ahead and do your shopping at the weekend if possible.
On your last day there will be a presentation ceremony where you will receive your end-of-course certificate and prizes will be given out. Let us know in advance if you need your name shown in any particular way.
Continuation of Learning
There are lots of opportunities to continue your learning after you have left, including having online lessons. Please speak to your teacher for more information.
And finally… going to the airport
If you are not using the Kingsway airport transfer service, allow plenty of time to get to the airport for your return flight. Check-in times are 2 hours before your flight leaves. Kingsway can help you with travel plans if you have not booked an airport transfer.
